Encaustic on panel

Exploring encaustic. In the complex world of Antiquity the Fields of Fayum in Egypt concealed the gilded images of the famous encaustic Fayum mummy paintings. Gold embelished the mummies of these people as they passed into history. Considered to be the “flesh of the gods”, gold was associated with immortality and the divine. Many Greeks believed that one could not pass into the next life without a generous adornment of gold. Perhaps much still lies beneath the Fields of Fayum.
